Why go solar?
Wouldn’t it be nice to cut
your electric bill in half saving possibly $200 or $300 each month? Solar Photovoltaic (electricity producing) Systems have been around for a long time. In the past they were expensive and the time to recover your investment was long. Technology and a demand for clean sources of energy have come a long way in the last 30 years. More businesses are getting on the solar bandwagon forcing system prices to come down. In Wisconsin, Focus on energy will pay up to 25% of the cost for new systems. There are even tax incentives that you may be eligible to receive. Finally, utilities are offering to purchase back any excess electricity you do not use.
Now, affordable to the average homeowner, a typical 2kw system might cost $16,000 before incentives. This is what the cost will be after incentives:
Original Cost: |

25% Focus on Energy Cash Back award: |

30% Federal Tax Credit: |

Additionally, many utilities are purchasing any excess energy that customers produce or offer other incentives. Keeping in mind that each installation is unique and the results may vary, consider the following example:
Let’s say your utility is repurchasing your excess electricity at a rate of $0.25/k Wh, or about $500 per year. Also, assume you are conservatively saving $100 per month on your electric bill, or about $1,200 per year. This adds up to $500 plus $1,200 for a return of $1,700 per year. This means the time to recover your investment is just over 4 years. Now your home is truly paying you.
Other Benefits:
Using Solar Energy is environmentally responsible. If Wisconsin produces 2Mw of electricity from solar energy, that’s like removing 221 cars from the roads or approximately 3 million pounds of greenhouse gases.
Using solar energy is patriotic. By using solar energy we are reducing our dependency on foreign oil.
